Golden Retrievers Comfort The Grieving In Newtown

Here are a group of golden retrievers that visited Newtown, Connecticut to soothe and comfort the souls of townspeople suffering in the wake of the tragic Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. These canines are part of a "comfort dog" program run by Lutheran Church Charities.

The idea behind the program is that the dogs can provide a gentle, healing presence that makes it easier for people to open up and talk about their feelings. Golden retrievers are particularly well-suited to this task, since they have a demeanor that is both calm and friendly.

Philippine hero dog “Kabang”

Philippine hero dog “Kabang”

Philippine hero dog “Kabang” is now on her second stage of treatment after her tumor was determined by her doctors at the University of California–Davis to be completely gone.

Posted on FB "Care For Kabang's Page":

"Kabang making the rounds saying hello to her friends in the offices of the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Kabang was given a physical examination yesterday that showed no signs of the tumor, so she able to start her heartworm treatment. This treatment consists of a deep injection of a drug called Immiticide. Prior to the Immiticide injection she was administered an IV of Carprofen to decrease the pain and inflammation associated with the Immiticide injection. She took the treatment well. She will now be on "bed rest" for 4-6 weeks until the next round of heartworm treatment. "

The group is an organization that raises funds for the treatment of Kabang who became internationally known for heroically saving two young girls from being run over by a speeding motorcycle.

Rachael Ray donates $500,000 to Sandy pets

Rachael Ray and boo

Rachael Ray donates $500,000 to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) to help pets and families who are hit by Superstorm Sandy and now struggling to cope.

The Emmy-winning chef said Friday that her pet food brand, Nutrish, is also shipping 4 tons of wet and dry dog food for Sandy animals, and her Yum-o! organization is donating $100,000 to City Harvest and the Food Bank for New York City.

"When you make your living in food, you have to give back in the same way," she said.

The ASPCA had rescued more than 250 animals and treated or provided supplies to nearly 6,000 in New York City and Long Island. It will use the money to lease a building that can be used as a central shelter for Sandy animals and to continue searching for lost pets, provide mobile veterinary services and hand out supplies.

The donation is the largest single gift made by Rachael's Rescue, whose nearly $4 million in donations to date are funded by the sale of Nutrish products.

"I hope this becomes a center of very happy endings," Ray said.

Cute Panda

Cute Panda, San Diego Zoo, cub

Cute little panda cub from San Diego Zoo.

The cute little panda cub was born July 29 and have not yet been named. He will be named later on to follow the 100 days old Chinese panda-naming tradition.

Public vote will decide on one of six suggested names for the panda: Qi Ji (Miracle), Yu Di (Raindrop), Da Hai (Big Ocean or Big Sea), Xiao Liwu (Little Gift), Yong Er (Brave Son) or Shui Long (Water Dragon).

The zoo will announce the winning name in a ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 13.

The cub was born to Bai Yun (White Cloud), the panda mom that has given birth to five other cubs at the San Diego Zoo. Four of those offspring were moved to China to join the country's giant panda conservation and breeding program. The previous cub born to Bai Yun was a male named Yun Zi (Son of Cloud). He remains in San Diego and celebrated his third birthday in August.

Researchers estimate only 1,600 giant pandas are left in the wild, and scientists maintain that captive breeding is an important way for them to study and conserve the endangered species.

Dog Saves Friends in Canoe

A black Labrador retriever rescue his two friends who looked trapped on a canoe that is being pushed by the rivers current. The dogs were barking as if they are communicating with each other. In my opinion, it's not really a rescue it looks more like the owner is training his dogs to retrieve a canoe in a river.

Marijuana's effect on pets

Vets worried at a staggering rise of dogs getting sick from marijuana in states where it is legal.

Many people believe that using the drug for medicinal purposes can be beneficial.

But according to a new study, one unintended side effect of legalized pot is a spike in the number of pets who get sick after accidentally ingesting the drug.

A study by Dr. Stacy Meola of the Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital concluded that animal poisoning caused by marijuana quadrupled in Colorado over the past five years, and vets say treating high dogs has become an increasingly common occurrence.

Doping your dog can get your pet very sick and may eventually die.

Once you pet ingest marijuana, they act lethargic, and start staggering and vomiting.  They may also become overly sensitive to sound and light.

In most cases, pets get hold of the drug through negligence of the owners.

So keep in mind marijuana is bad for your pets, keep them away from it be responsible. If you suspect your pet might be sick from the drug be honest and tell your vet right away so they can give proper treatment.

Hartsdale Pet Cemetery is now a Historic Place

Hartsdale Pet Cemetery

Hartsdale Pet Cemetery is now a Historic Place and the first animal burial ground to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Services.

The 115-year-old Hartsdale Pet Cemetery is home to more than 70,000 pets.

"The addition of Hartsdale Pet Cemetery to the Register is a fitting way to recognize the long-standing and significant role animal companions have played in our nation's history and culture," Carol Shull, interim keeper of the National Register of Historic Places, said in a news release.

Hartsdale Pet Cemetery is also known for its War Dog Memorial, dedicated after WWI as a public tribute to honor military working dogs.

Dog killed while saving owner from train

I saw this heartbreaking story on Yahoo that happened in Kazakhstan, where a dog was killed while trying to save its owner from an oncoming train.

The suicidal owner had passed out on the train tracks after drinking a bottle of alcohol. According to Russian news site Ria Novosti, the man told authorities that his dog dragged him to safety. The dog wasn't able to avoid being hit.
"Upon seeing the train, the dog started pulling its owner away," said Aida Muldashevam, who investigated the incident. "When train drivers saw the dog on the rail tracks, they used the emergency brake."

Unfortunately, it was too late. The dog was killed instantly, while the owner was taken to the hospital. He had two broken ribs and an injury to his shoulder.
Dogs have a well-deserved reputation for loyalty.

Baby Elephant Tries to Keep Up with Family

I know this is not a dog video but I can't resist it's so cute. It is in Tarangire National Park in Tanzania a family of elephants is seen crossing the road. First, a grown elephant crosses the road, followed by a medium sized one. Then, scampering from behind in the bushes, a tiny, adorable baby elephant runs through the brush to catch up with mum. I wish I can have that baby elephant as a pet.

Hope, the dog found brutally tortured have a new home

hope dog

Hope, the dog found brutally tortured in Texas last week, has a new home. According to the Parker County Sheriff's Office, the pug mix has been adopted by the family whose ranch she was first spotted wandering on.

Charlie and Kit Moncrief have agreed to adopt Hope, who continues to recover from what the Dallas Morning News described as "one of the worst cases of animal cruelty ever reported in the county." Hope was found dehydrated, her mouth sealed shut with electrical tape and her tongue protruding. She had five large cuts that took more than 100 stitches to close.

"I have known the Moncrief family for many, many years," Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler said in an emailed statement to Yahoo News. "I can't think of a better family for Hope to belong to. She will think she is in heaven at her new home with her new family."

Veterinarians at Bowie Drive Animal Hospital say that Hope, who is estimated to be between 3 and 4 years old, will make a full recovery, though she may need part of her tongue removed.

Hope's story garnered worldwide media attention and more than $35,000 offered for information leading to an arrest in the case.

Fowler said they have investigated several leads but are still seeking the suspect or suspects involved.

"This is the bottom line," Fowler added. "If they will torture a defenseless creature, what else are they capable of? We need to find the person(s) responsible for this."

Only evil can do a thing like this to a defenseless creature. Some humans really don't deserve to live.

Pet Detectives Looking for Lost Beagle in L.A.

I found this interesting news about Pet detectives, I didn't know they really exist. I thought Pet detectives are real only in movies. You can read the news below.

Pet detectives are hunting in North Hollywood, Calif., for 45-pound brown and white Beagle named Gadget. The 4-year-old dog went missing last Thursday, and his owners are now offering a $2,500 reward for the return of their four-legged friend.

Ryan and Amanda Kelley said that four days ago they were in New York for a friend’s wedding when they received a call that Gadget had escaped their friend’s Los Angeles house.

“Our friend started chasing him, almost two blocks north, and then Gadget started heading east from there,” Ryan said.
Devastated by the news, the Kelley’s decided to skip the wedding and fly back to Los Angeles the next morning, then contacting pet detectives to search for Gadget.

Annalisa Berns, a pet detective for Southern California’s Pet Search and Rescue, immediately decided there was enough information to begin a search for Gadget.
“When a client contacts us, first and foremost we get as much information as we can to make sure it’s something we can help with,” said Berns. “So from there I started to call around to the pet detectives I work with, and found all three of us were available.”

Saturday morning, two of the pet detectives along with two search dogs began to look for Gadget.  The hound dogs rotated every four hours and were able to pick up on Gadget’s scent, but the trail was lost at big intersections. The Kelley’s have only received one phone call on a possible sighting of Gadget, but still lack major leads.

“The emotions are all over right now, it’s really hard to handle,” said Ryan Kelley. “Right now it’s literally one moment we’ll be feeling hopeful and one moment we’re dreading the worst. It’s exhausting.”

However, Berns said owners of lost dogs should never give up hope.
“The most important thing is to be persistent and thorough,” said Berns. “There is a very high success rate for lost pets especially up to two weeks they’ve gone missing, even up to months after they’ve gone missing.”

While pet detectives can cost up to thousands of dollars depending on how far they are traveling, Kelley says he’s received an overwhelming amount of free help from the community.

“We’ve had easily 30 to 40 volunteers just here physically looking and making posters and calling shelters,” said Kelley. “We’ve also had about 10 to 20 people other places in other states giving advice.”

Berns says to avoid the heartache an owner should buy a GPS locator for their pet.

Meanwhile, the search for Gadget, who was once used in lab tests in Spain, continues.

“Knowing that he has had the past he’s had and watching him develop from a sheltered, scared animal into a dog, something with emotions, it’s been great seeing him learn that,” said Ryan.

Dog Stayed beside his Dead Dog friend

Here is a picture of a male pit bull that looks sad. It refused to leave the female pit bull that lay dead on the side of a road. Truly a heartbreaking photo circulating Facebook.

The female pit bull appeared to have been hit by a car and the male pit bull stayed by her side.

"The male pit bull wouldn't leave her, so a nearby business set out food and water," Fox 10 reported. "He stayed with her nuzzling her and lying nearby until the city came to remove her Saturday morning."

The dogs did not have owner tags when they were found.

"We picked up this other dog and took him to our East Valley shelter," Rodrigo Silva, an animal control official, told the station. "Right now it doesn't look like he has any behavioral or health problems."

"a little withdrawn and appears to be very sad."

"If he continues to show these signs of withdrawal we will place him in a recovery home that can help him with his grieving,"

"I am so pissed about this," Karyn Aspan, who saw the photo on Facebook, wrote on her wall. "Animal control responded 14.5 hours later."
