The puppy was a mix breed poodle and is suffering from animal bites around her neck, and is now being treated by the San Francisco Animal Care and Control. They named the puppy "Gem."

Fox and Dog: Against the fur industry

Fox and Dog

Fox and Dog

Tinni the dog has found an unlikely friend in a Norwegian forest, a fox. The dog is owned by Torgeir Berge, he photographed the two furry friends as they play on grass. Berge with the help of his friend Berit Helberg is writing a book about Tinni the dog and Sniffer the fox to educate people about the realities of the fur industry.

"Sniffer and Tinni want our help to spread their message about fur and friendship, and the knowledge that the fox is only a dog of the forest with the same reactions and movements as the dogs we look at as man's best friend" Helberg writes on her website.

The book will be released next year and will show how similar foxes and dogs actually are.

United Airlines nearly killed her pet dog

Janet Sinclair owner of a greyhound named Sedona claims that her pet suffered a full heat stroke after she got out of a United Airlines flight from San Diego to Boston. She said that United Airlines agreed to pay for the hospital bills only if she she signed a non-disclosure agreement.

She also said that the dog's crate was filled with urine, feces, and blood.

Janet Sinclair was moving from San Diego to Boston lasy July and opted to have the “PetSafe” program of the airline company. “PetSafe” program guarantee that pets will not be exposed to temperatures greater than 85 degrees for more than 45 minutes.

She had to pay extra for the animals to stop in Houston to take a break from flying in an air-conditioned vehicle. But, when she looked outside her airplane window at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, she saw Sedona’s supposed personal handler kicking the dog’s crate.

The owner Roger Wilday then found his dog just laying down next to a discarded carrier bag and refused to return to him.

"I walked over and saw a carrier bag then I saw it move. I thought it was a bag of kittens, but then I saw her little arms and a head, and the baby started to cry."

Family dog alert parents to abusive baby sitter

A family dog shows its loyalty and protective instincts by alerting the parents about their abusive baby sitter in South Carolina.

On WCSC report, the dog began showing aggressive behavior whenever the baby sitter, Alexis Khan 22 years old, would approach the couple's then 7-month-old son, Finn. Even though the baby sitter has already been employed by the family for five months. The parents, fearing the worst but not wishing to act presumptuously, hid a camera phone between the couch cushions.

Their worst fears were quickly confirmed. Finn's father, Benjamin Jordan, recounted the details to WCSC:
"It started with cussing," Jordan said. "Then you hear slap noises and his crying changes from a distress cry to a pain cry. I just wanted to reach through the audio tape, go back in time and just grab him up."

"To know that five months I had handed my child to a monster, not knowing what was going on in my house for that day," said Jordan.

Khan was arrested several weeks later. Confronted with the audio made by the parents, she reportedly confessed. She was later sentenced to one to three years in prison. She will also have to register as a child abuser and will not be allowed to work with children in the future.

The Jordans told WSCS that their child is doing fine and shows no lingering effects of the abuse. They also gave thanks to their dog.

"Had our dog not alerted us to the trouble, had my wife's instincts not said we need to make something happen, it could have been Finn that was killed by the baby sitter. You never know," he said.

Restaurant refuses Iraq War Veteran and service dog; Owner Apologize

James Glaser with his service dog Jack tried to dine in Big I’s Restaurant in Oxford, Massachusetts but was quickly denied entry and was asked to leave. James Glaser is a 41-year-old Air Force veteran he was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder in November of 2011 when he retired and says that he does not leave his house without Jack by his side.

“I hear, ‘Get that fake service dog out of my restaurant!.’” Big I’s owner, Russell Ireland didn’t consider the canine a true service dog and said, “This is a post-traumatic stress dog. It's to give him emotional support. How much emotional support do you need when you are eating breakfast?”

James grabbed Jack’s paperwork to show the doubting owner that he was indeed a legitimate service dog but was still given a fight.

“I said, ‘I have his certification paperwork right here. He’s not fake, he’s 100% legit.’ He like, ‘I don’t give a [expletive]. I don’t have time for that. Get out of my restaurant.’” So James called the police and Sergeant Anthony Saad with the Oxford PD confirmed the dog’s paperwork and attempted to convince Ireland. While no charges were brought, the Iraq Vet says he will file a complaint with the Americans with Disabilities Act which states that businesses must, “allow someone with PTSD to bring in a service animal that has been trained to calm the person when he or she has an anxiety attack.” James said, “Got 21 distinguished years in the military. After everything we’ve done, we just shouldn’t be treated like that.”

The owner of a Massachusetts diner later apologized for throwing a disabled veteran and his service dog out of his restaurant.

Russell Ireland said to the crowd and to Glaser, "I stand here in front of you embarrassed, ashamed and I just ask for some forgiveness."

After the two hugged it out, Ireland said he now has a better understanding of veterans suffering from PTSD. "I never realized what a mistake I made. The information about post-traumatic stress and the situation of these vets, it needs to be addressed."

michiganpaw.org aim to reconnect lost pets and owners

michiganpaw.org
michiganpaw.org is a Michigan animal welfare group now aims to help people find lost pets using their new features on their website.

Their new map feature will help people contact an animal shelter that may have their cat or dog. The map also helps people find the right shelter if they discover a lost pet.

Linda Reider of the Michigan Humane Society says most counties have a single shelter that holds stray animals, but urban areas could have many. Michigan law requires shelters to hold stray animals for four to seven days, depending on whether they have a tag or some other identification.

Pets usually kept indoors are the ones most frequently found without identification.

Big increase in marijuana poisoning in pets

SEATTLE -- After Washington voted to legalize marijuana last year, and veterinarians are now reporting a disturbing increase in pets being accidentally poisoned.

Hempfest has Seattle at the epicenter of pot culture this weekend, but all that marijuana is leading to some unknowing users.

Veterinarian Dr. Cheri Trisheium said she's seen a big jump in dogs getting sick from eating pot.

"They are sort of out of it," she said. "They are kind of bobbing, they are easily startled, their eyes are dilated."

While rarely fatal, marijuana poisoning in pets can be serious.

"In severe cases though, their blood pressure can drop dramatically. They can have all the signs and symptoms of shock," Trisheium said.

Representatives from a pet insurance company called Trupanion say claims from pets ingesting marijuana are up 37 percent this year in Washington.

The average bill for treating an animal is $579, but that can easily climb into the thousands of dollars.

"For an owner who sees their dog absolutely altered and not themselves, it can look like seizures to owners, it can be incredibly alarming," Trisheium said.

Vets say another problem is just getting the owners of sick pets to admit what happened.

"Folks are often like, 'No, no, no, there is no way he could have,' even if your friend smokes or uses edible marijuana. We try to let them know that we don't care, we just want to help them with their pet," Trisheium said.

Trisheium said if you suspect your pet has eaten marijuana, you should get them to a vet as soon as possible to help them recover and rule out any other problems.

Alaskan Bear rides a Jet Ski

A young brown bear jump on top of a Jet Ski while in the Naknek River with his mom. The bear appeared to be preparing to take the personal watercraft for a spin. It was captured by Graham Morrison, the owner of a fishing guide service in King Salmon, Alaska.

Morrison posted the photos to his company's Facebook page Monday, along with commentary about what could have prompted the bear to jump on the jet ski parked at a dock.

Morrison said that the mother bear was eating her catch in the water and the baby bear appeared to growl at her in an effort to get her to share. The bear slid off the back of the jet ski at one point before climbing back atop and then standing on its two hind legs with its hands on the wheel.

Morrison told the Alaska Dispatch there was no damage done to the Sea Doo during its brief encounter with the bear.

Mastiff saves owner, grandson from fire

A family rescued a 150-pound Mastiff named "Bear" from a shelter, and two weeks later "Bear" saved his owner from fire. When a fire broke out at Carol Swinson's Long Island home during the night the fire alarms did not go off. Bear sensed that there is something wrong and jumped on Carol to waker her up and her 9-year-old grandson.

Swinson says she was startled at first because Bear had been good about following the rule of staying off her bed. A very grateful Swinson says, "I'll do right by that dog for the rest of my life."

Flying with pet

Flying with pet, flying dog

Check out this cool pictures of a man flying with his pet dog. Dan McManus is a professional paragliding and hang gliding instructor in Utah. He has been flying for about 37 years and he can be found most days catching the breeze at the flight park on a mountain ridge at the south end of the Salt Lake valley. However, in recent years he has also been joined on many flights by his service dog Shadow. McManus suffers from a general anxiety disorder but manages to keep many of the symptoms in check with the constant companionship of his Australian cattle dog. While flying in itself has been a calming pursuit he soon found out that his service dog never wanted to be away from him (a bit of separation anxiety for Shadow).

Tips on how to keep your Pets cool this summer

summer heat,pets,dogs,cats,dog,cat

The temperature is rising fast this summer, with that extreme heat it is not only us who suffer but also our pets.

The American Red Cross has made steps you and your family can follow to stay safe in the heat.

As you head outdoors this week, the biggest tip, says the American Red Cross is to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.
“You know our mothers always told us, ‘drink a lot of water,’ and a lot of times we don't,” Daniel Peterson of the Red Cross says.

The Red Cross says children and the elderly are the most susceptible to the heat, so watch for signs of heat exhaustion.

“Basically, where a person starts to get red, they might get dizzy or nauseous, and they'll start sweating a lot,” Peterson says. “Heat stroke is critical and you need to call 9-1-1. That's actually when its life-threatening and the person losses consciousness.” The SPCA tells us pets can also suffer from heat exhaustion and heat stroke too.

“I've seen a dog seizure from heat stroke and it’s an awful sight,” Katie Meskil, SPCA shelter director, says. “They're more susceptible to it after the first time they get it and it can eventually be deadly.” So make sure your pets have access to shade and cool water. The Red Cross says people should take the same advice when working in the hot temps.

“If you are on a shift for eight hours working on a road, make sure you have water at all times and that you do have more breaks, especially when it gets hot and you are in direct sunlight,” Peterson advises. And never, ever leave your children or pets in a vehicle. In the summer months, the temperature inside can reach 120 degrees in less than five minutes.

“Even if you are running in for a quick beverage at the local convenience store, don't leave them in the car,” Peterson says. The Red Cross also recommends that parents schedule play dates and sport activities first thing in the morning, or in the evening when the temperatures are cooler.

California Police Kills Dog in cold blood

Police officers in Hawthorne, California are facing some heat this week after a video was posted to Reddit which showed them shooting a man’s dog. They shot the dog helplessly. This is what Hawthorne Police are really about they are cold blooded killer who put the law in their own hands. If they can kill a dog that easily they can kill innocent civilians too.

The man, Leon Rosby, was taking video on his phone of several officers who had closed off a street and were going into a home; he, in turn, was being recorded by another bystander. After a brief exchange with the officers, they approached Rosby, who put his dog–which appears to be a Rottweiler–into his car and then turned and willingly put his hands behind his back to be handcuffed for allegedly obstructing justice at a crime scene.

However, the officers can be seen getting a little rough with Rosby and his dog became agitated and began barking from the car, which had the windows rolled down. The animal jumped out and approached the group, still barking, and one officer opened fire, shooting several times. Rosby, who is clearly devastated in the video, is planning to sue the Hawthorne Police Department; however, they say they were not only protecting themselves, but were protecting Rosby, who was handcuffed and wouldn’t have been able to protect himself had the dog attacked.

Hawthorne police Lt. Scott Swain continued to LIE to protect his fellow police thugs “It looks like the officer tried to reach down and grab the leash, and then the dog lunges in the direction of him and the other officers there.”

Warning the video is very graphic, and shows cops in action arresting innocent bystander and mericlessly killing a pet dog.

Guide dog saves trainers from out of control car

A guide dog saved a man and a woman dog trainers in California when a vehicle swerve through a public sidewalk at high speed.

Todd Jurek and Danielle Alvarado, both employees of Guide Dogs for the Blind which trains dogs to assist visually impaired individuals, were training a dog in San Rafael, California when a 93-year-old woman who's trying to park her car lost control and put the car in reverse that smashed windows of some establishments. They were taking an 18-month-old Labrador retriever named O’Neil, out for a training walk when it happened.

"It was just an unbelievable sight to see something going backwards, barreling down the sidewalk," Jurek told the paper.

One of the trainers is blindfolded as part of the dog's training, they didn't see the fast approaching car but O’Neil sensed something is wrong and pulled his head backward, and it caught Jurek's attention who then also looked backward just in time to see the car.

Jurek said O’Neil underwent a series of tests on Tuesday to ensure he was not traumatized by the incident. Guide Dogs for the Blind says it hopes to have the courageous pup placed with an individual sometime in the coming weeks.

The news was reported by San Jose Mercury News.

Iran will Arrest Dogs

Iran is cracking down on people who owns pet dogs, as they viewed dogs as “najis” or unclean in Islam.

Guard dogs that are kept outside, sheep dogs used for herding, and hounds for hunting have always been acceptable, however the increasing number of pets being acquired by a middle class family that somehow imitate Western culture is reportedly causing increasing new alarm to Iranian authorities.

Grand Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirzi in June 2010 said that dog companionship is “a blind imitation” of Western culture,” warning that such behavior would lead to family corruption and damage societal values.

Many people in the West love their dogs more than their wives and children,” the Ayatollah told the media.

The only blind people here are the Iranian authorities.

Raw food are said to be dangerous for pets

Raw pet food,dog food

Raw pet foods are uncooked meat, organs, and soft bones. There have been some disagreements if this pet diet has nutritional benefits or if it is detrimental to the pet's health.

Those who are supporting the raw pet food diet argue that the contents of raw food are more biologically appropriate than commercial pet foods. They said that the results of this diet is improved coat quality, healthy teeth, and prevention of disease like diabetes, and prevention of allergies.

Those who are not in favor of this diet are saying that scientific research shows that feeding raw food may result to nutrient deficiencies, like calcium. And there are also harmful bacteria found in raw foods like Salmonella, Clostridium difficile, and E. coli.

Dogs may not show symptoms that they are infected but they can spread the bacteria through their stool.

The Canadian Association of Raw Pet Food Manufacturers will be implementing tighter production regulations to eliminate and prevent bacterial contamination in their raw pet food products.

Whichever diet you'll be giving to your pets it is always best to consult the veterinarian, because you can never tell if your pet has allergic reaction to the pet food.

Pets in the US today lives longer

Banfield Pet Hospital release their 2013 State of Pet Health Report and things are looking good for our four legged friends. The report stated increase in lifespan of both dogs and cats. The average lifespan of a dog in 2012 was 11 years which is up nearly half a year since 2002 (4% increase), while the average lifespan of a cat in 2012 was 12, which gone up by 1 year since 2002 (10% increase). The report also stated that the small breed dogs live longer than giant breeds.

The States with the longest lifespan for dogs are South Dakota, Montana, Oregon, New Mexico, and Colorado. While states with the shortest lifespan for dogs are Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Delaware, and Massachusetts.

For cats, the states with the longest lifespan are Montana, Colorado, Rhode Island, Illinois, and Nebraska. While states with the shortest lifespan for cats are Delaware, Ohio, Louisiana, Kentucky, and Mississippi.

Obesity has caught up with our cats and dogs, overweight and obesity have reached epidemic levels in dogs and cats in the United States, affecting approximately 1 in 5 dogs and cats. Although some might consider pets to be cuter or happier when they are overweight, the truth is, being overweight is linked to  other serious conditions such as arthritis, heart and respiratory problems and diabetes mellitus (cats).

THORNTON, Colo. (CBS4)- Thornton Police are looking for two thieves who stole puppies after hiding them inside their clothing.

Police said both men just walked out the door of the Pet Ranch located at 3823 E. 120th Ave. in Thornton with the puppies hidden.

The first puppy nabbing happened March 10 about 4:30 p.m. The man had taken a Maltese/Silky Terrier puppy valued at $1,099.

Just four days later about 7:10 p.m. another puppy was stolen this time a Chihuahua valued at $799. A man used his family as a distraction.

Witnesses told police a family of four, an adult male and female with two little girls looked at a black and tan Chihuahua puppy. The man concealed the puppy in his pants under his shirt and then walked out of the store. The woman and two girls followed.

Oxygen masks for pets

Oxygen masks for pets

DOVER — A local resident told Dover Fire Capt. Mike Mossor about a grant geared toward providing oxygen masks specifically for cats and dogs.

Mossor liked the idea. He knew from experience how attached people are to their pets, even in the chaos and aftermath of a fire.

“If they have pets, most of the time, folks are pretty emotional,” he said.

While the Dover firefighters have been known to use oxygen masks to save man’s best friends, Mossor recognized an opportunity to improve pet-rescue efforts.

So he applied for a grant, and within two weeks, the Dover Fire Department owned two pet oxygen-mask kits from Invisible Fence of Canton.

The company, according to owner Rob Myers, has established “Project Breathe” with the goal of equipping every fire station in America and Canada with pet oxygen masks.

The purpose of the donations is to allow firefighters to administer oxygen to pets suffering from smoke inhalation when rescued from fires.

“We realize that humans are the first priority, but, in many cases, pets can be saved if firefighters have the right equipment,” said Myers. “Project Breathe is simply a way of giving firefighters the tools necessary to save pets’ lives.”

Each kit contains a set of three sizes of oxygen masks for dogs and cats, Mossor said. He noted that one set is on the ladder truck, which is the first truck taken to fires within the city, and the other is on Engine 201, the first truck taken to fires in Dover Township.

Mossor was quick to emphasize that firefighters don’t typically respond to animal calls. The masks are “simply a tool we can use if we come across an animal that has been overcome by smoke in a fire.”

When they do, they’ll be better equipped to help pets rather than use human masks that simply don’t fit.

Dog saved missing Polish girl

A small dog saved the life of a three-year-old girl who went missing in Poland and spent the night in freezing temperatures, according to Polish firefighters.

The little girl named Julia, disappeared on Friday and was found lying in marshes several kilometres from her house on Saturday morning, with the dog by her side.

Firefighters who found the girl said the dog kept the child warm enough throughout the night, with temperatures plunging to minus five degrees Celsius.

More than 250 firefighters, police officers, rescue workers and residents searched for the child throughout the night.

They also employed a police helicopter with infrared cameras and six search dogs to look for the girl.

Julia was taken to a hospital where she is recovering. She appears to have suffered some frostbite but her health condition is not life-threatening, the hospital said.

Nine pets die in South Windsor fire

A house fire at 3441 Longfellow Ave had killed nine pets. The chief fire officer said the fire at a house went out by itself by the time the residents arrived home at about 11 a.m.

“The fire self-extinguished and I can’t exactly say why, but I’m assuming that it ran out of oxygen or fuel probably oxygen and it put itself out,” said the fire chief.

The family have one dog, one cat, four kittens, a bird and three pet rats that are left at home. All died except the dog.

The fire originated in the kitchen and it was contained there. The pets probably died as a result of smoke inhalation the fire chief said.

Dog saves Oklahoma family from house fire

The family from Wellston, Okla., lost their home of 17 years in a house fire, but they escaped with their lives thanks to a pit bull.

Baby, a 10-year-old pit bull from Lincoln County, Okla., reportedly saved her family from a fire that destroyed her home, reported Wednesday.

Little dog saves family from fire

Bella the dog is tiny and is only 11 months old, but her annoying and insistent bark on Monday night saved a family of four from tragedy.

Bella is a Cavalier King Charles cross with Griffen and Maltese. The dog is trusting and loving.

Jo Conroy, Bella's owner says she cannot bear to think about a different outcome from the fire that gutted her children's bedroom.

On Monday around 8.30pm their family pet was outside the back door barking.

"I thought she was barking at my son who was hanging something out the bedroom window."

But the barking continued and Ms Conroy then thought Bella was barking at the neighbours because of a snipping sound like they were in the garden pruning.

But that snipping was the sound of flames licking along the side of the wooden villa on the Dublin/Keith St corner.

"I told her to be quiet, but then she was just going crazy, barking insanely."

When Ms Conroy investigated further, she saw the flames licking down the side of the house; they were coming from her children's bedroom window that was broken by the heat of the fire from a bed that was on fire.

With her children's father, Ms Conroy ran back into the house and up to the children's bedroom at the front of the house.

Her daughter and son were in a small space between the wall and a box of toys. She reached under and pulled out her 2-year old daughter and gave her to her father. She then reached down and pulled out her son, aged 4, and ran outside.

All four spent the night in Wanganui Hospital for smoke inhalation, and three days later, Ms Conroy is reflective about the family's good fortune.

They lost everything, but they were covered by insurance.

She cuddles Bella and tells her she'll be getting a bone every day.

"Bella is always very good with the children. She has a love affair with my daughter."

Bad breath in pets

Bad breath in pets

If your pet have bad breath, you need to take care of your pet's dental health.

February is National Pet Dental Month a month set aside to encourage pet owners to have their pets' teeth and mouths checked.  Dr. Penny Dye with Dakota Hills Veterinary Clinic says pet dental care is extremely important because it is part of the overall general health of your pet. Dye says, "You know, they don't brush their teeth on a daily basis.

They develop dental disease and if left unchecked it could lead to abscess teeth, broken teeth. Some of our pets, cats in particular, can get cavities actually and root resorption problems, and so it leads to chronic infections that can affect other parts of the body."

Dye says you should brush your pet's teeth on a daily basis just like you do your own she says plaque can build up on your pet's teeth in one day just like our own teeth so taking that extra time to care for your pet's mouth can really help in the long run.

"There are a lot of products available for home dental care. I think it's important to realize that that's just part of the supportive, part of that dental care and all of it that owners can do that they find works best for their pet helps keep that pet's mouth healthy throughout the year or in between dental cleanings and so it's all encouraged to do, but certainly shouldn't be considered a replacement for that dental cleaning once every 6 to 12 months."

So even though February is National Pet Dental Month Dye says dental health should be a daily ritual for pet owners throughout the year. "I think a lot of people don't realize first of all that pets don't complain about their teeth. The most common sign of an abscess tooth is no sign at all. And so if we're not looking for it, we don't find it, and so their pet can suffer unnecessarily and unknowingly to the owner and their quality of life then suffers as well.

Mexico dog mutilated by drug traffickers recovers

Mexico dog mutilated by drug traffickers recovers

MEXICO CITY (AP) — A dog reportedly mutilated by Mexican drug traffickers is recovering at a sanctuary for abused and abandoned dogs.

Sanctuary owner Patricia Ruiz says Pay de Limon, or Lemon Pie, was fitted with prosthetic front legs last year. The Belgian shepherd mix now walks, jumps and runs.

Ruiz says the dog was left in a trash can to die after his two fronts legs were cut off. She says people who asked her to help Pay de Limon told her that drug traffickers used the dog to practice for mutilating humans.

Pay de Limon is one of 128 abused dogs living at the Milagros Caninos sanctuary. Dogs on wheelchairs, blind, deaf or ill frolic and run around the huge sanctuary in the southern part of Mexico City.

Pets really do provide health benefits

A number of studies have in fact found that pets have positive effects.

"The dominant research approach for decades was only socio-psychological and examined certain effects of pets on their owners," said Detlev Nolte, general secretary of the Bremen-based research group Pets in Society.

The conclusions were based mainly on surveys and observations, so the findings were not very robust. Gradually, however, scientifically based research approaches have been developed as well, he said.

Ample evidence is now available that pets benefit their owners in many ways. There are physical benefits, for example, one of which is rather obvious but important nonetheless: exercise.

"According to a study by US scientists, 150 minutes of exercise weekly is enough to have a positive effect on the cardiovascular system," noted Ralf Jordan, chief physician at the Cardiac Rehabilitation and Prevention Clinic in Duisburg, Germany.

Dog owners are more likely to reach this number than the dogless.

Studies also show that people who are physically active outdoors daily have a stronger immune system.

"A dog forces you to go outdoors regularly," remarked Udo Kopernik, spokesman for the German Kennel Club. "People who own or look after a horse have to leave their home often, too."

You don't have to step outside to enjoy the health benefits of pets, though.

"It's been proven that the mere presence of animals, and above all petting them, greatly helps to lower blood pressure and heart rate," Jordan said.

The sympathetic nervous system is less active, he said, so the body releases fewer stress hormones such as adrenaline. This applies less to goldfish than to dogs, cats and other domesticised animals.

"A number of scientists have also found that physical activity has a beneficial effect on chronic illnesses like diabetes, cancer, hypertension and chronic bronchitis," Jordan said.

Having a pet can promote physical activity, he pointed out, thereby helping to keep such illnesses subdued and reducing the number and intensity of attacks, as in the case of bronchitis.

Pets can be psychologically beneficial, too. Various studies have shown that a person who lives alone, but has a pet, not only feels less lonely but also makes friends more easily. "Pets can serve to break the ice and make social contacts easier," Nolte said.

Life-jackets for dogs

Life-jackets for dogs

Department for Agriculture in Colorado is considering making dog life-jackets in pet-centre pools across the state compulsory in order to ensure all pets are safe.

Authorities say the change in law is necessary following the death of three dogs  in the state last year.

The draft rules state: 'Every dog must wear a personal flotation device while in or while having access to a pool area whenever the pool water is deeper than the height of the dog at its shoulder.

'All pools must have a minimum of one lifeguard constantly observing the pool area while dogs have access to the pool area in addition to any other required supervision.'

The plans are due to go out for a public consultation.
