Laundry Detergent Pods Poisoning

Laundry Detergent Pods Poisoning, poison, dog poison, pet poison

A report about thousands of children poisoned by laundry detergent pods, according to journal Pediatrics study there are 17,230 cases were children 6 years old and below ingested, inhaled or had skin or eye injury caused by laundry detergent pods in 2012-2013. The research was done by researchers at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. They also said that 769 kids in the U.S. were hospitalized and one child died after ingesting a laundry detergent pod. 30 of the children went into comas and 12 suffered seizures.

Laundry detergent pods are single-use packs that is colored bright similar to candies. They are easy to use, just drop it in the washer no need to measure. These laundry detergent pods are not just dangerous to children but also your pets. Pets may mistake them as toys. Detergents contains harmful chemicals known as ionic and anionic surfactants. If your pets ingest a large amount it can be deadly, and chemicals in the detergent pods are more deadly since they are concentrated compared to bottled detergents.

The most common sign when your pet ingest a laundry detergent pod is vomiting. You will see your pets vomit has foam. These foam can be inhaled and can suffocate your pets.

What to do if your pets ingest laundry detergent?

1. Call your veterinarian immediately
2. If it turns out to be a minor ingestion and there are no vomiting, your vet may tell you to give your pet water or milk to weaken the effects of the poison.
3. If the detergent gets on your pets coat you will need rinse it with water immediately.
4. If you pet can't breath and vomits a lot take your pet to the vet immediately.

Remember prevention is always better than care, so keep all laundry products in a safe place away from pets and kids.

Foxes Declared as Pest in Australia

foxes, fox, Australia, fox

Looks like Australia hates Fantastic Mr Fox or Fox news, Foxes which are not native to Australia and have multiplied in high numbers are now declared a pest in New South Wales, Australia. Authorities are also concerned because some are bringing them as pets. The NSW government issued a pest control order for foxes which has been introduced for the first time in the state that will force owners to obtain a permit.

Foxes are blamed to cost the Australian environment and economy about $227.5 million (£121m) in damages, because of the damage they cause for livestock producers, according to Primary Industries minister Katrina Hodgkinson.

Sydney Fox Rescue president, Charlie Jackson-Martin is concerned about the order "We understand that we are just one fox control method amongst many, however forcing the closure of our rescue means removing the only no-kill option for foxes currently available in NSW." Their group is a registered charity organization that rescues and finds carers for injured or orphaned foxes.

Safety Tips in Owning a Pet

Pets are considered as a family member since we spend precious moments with them and they give us unconditional love. However, having a pet is not just feeding, walking, and playing with them. We also need to take care of them and ourselves and prevent our pets having bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic diseases.

Here are some tips by Veterinary Dr. Donna Solomon of Animal Medical Center of Chicago to prevent zoonotic disease in pets:

1. Have your pet's stool sample evaluated for parasites twice a year.
2. Give your dog heartworm prevention drugs.
3. Don't let your pet lick your face.
4. Don't let your cats roam and hunt outdoors.
5. Wash any bite or scratch wound you get from your pets immediately with soapy water.
6. Wash hands before you handle food.
7. Cook food to safe internal temperatures
8. Do not feed your pet raw meat.
9. Dispose your pet's waste properly.
10. Vaccinate your pets for Rabies and Leptospirosis.
11. Do not let your pet drink contaminated water.
12. Do not touch or let your pet go near wild animals.
13. Eliminate or reduce the population of rodents.
14. Wash your hands after touching your pet.
15. Wipe your pet's feet after walking outside and its anal area after pooping with hypoallergenic diaper wipes.
16. If your pet is sick, seek veterinary care.

A Ventura County Sheriff's Deputy Threaten to Kill a Pet Dog

pet dog, dog, cop, cops kills dog,

I came a cross a story of a dog owner on gizmodo about how a Ventura County Sheriff's Deputy threaten to shoot and kills his 21 months old pet dog. He said while they were camping the cops approached them and shouted "Who's dogs are these? Get them under control or I'll shoot them!" which in my opinion is unprofessional for a police officer. One of the cop even had his gun pointed at his dogs.

Trigger happy SOBs!

Despite being in the 21st century some authorities of other countries are still living in the stone age. Islamic authorities in Malaysia are investigating a "dog patting" event that has the purpose of improving dog ownership in the multi-ethnic Muslim-majority country.

The event is called "I want to touch a dog" and held in a park on the suburbs of Kuala Lumpur last Sunday, October 19, 2014. The event encouraged people to pat dogs which are considered unclean in Islam. It was such a success that it drew hundreds of spectators majority are Muslims that it was noticed by crazy religious leaders.

One of a crazy Muslim leader, Nooh Gadut said it was an insult to them, "Don't try to create a culture that is opposite to Islam."

Syed Azmi Alhabshi is a Muslim who organized the event said that he did it to help people  overcome their fear of dogs and promote compassion towards animals.

Maybe some of their clerics are supporters of ISIS.

Bentley, dog of Dallas Nurse, Infected with Ebola, ebola dog

Meet Bentley, he's a one-year-old King Charles Spaniel owned by Nina Pham who contracted Ebola while taking care of Thomas Eric Duncan who died last week because of Ebola. Bentley is under medical surveillance. In a news report, officials said that Bentley will be taken care of in a former naval air base where he’ll be supplied with bedding and toys. I hope he'll not end up like Excalibur owned by the nurse in Spain which also got infected with Ebola. Excalibur was euthanized.

Poor Bentley, he looks scared and I bet he is missing Nina.

Please Don't Give Your PET POISON

PET POISON, food not good for dogs, dog poison

If you think you are giving your pet treats, think again you may be giving your beloved pets poison. If you are eating tasty food and your pet stares at you looking so adorable, don't give them your leftover if it contains human food that are poison to pets.

Check out the very useful infographic from vet-medic.com, that identifies food that can harm your dog. It also offers healthy treats that you can give your dogs.

Rule of the Thumb:
"Hard treats such as bones, can damage teeth. If you can push your thumbnail into a treat and it leaves a mark, it's probably safe. The same rule applies for chew toys."

"No food is right for every dog, so watch what they eat, and make sure that you're the one setting the menu."

Poison:

sausages - contains preservatives that can cause thiamine deficiency. Contains Sulphites
Cooked bones - can splinter and damage dog's intestine.
cow's milk - most dogs are lactose intolerant
onions and garlic - can cause Heinz body anemia, contains disulphide
cakes, sweets, artificial sweeteners and mints - artificial sweeteners can cause dog's blood sugar to drop dangerously low that can cause seizure, vomiting, liver failure, and coma. Contains Xylitol
Human Chocolate - acts as stimulant that can cause diarrhea, high heart rate, muscle tremors and seizures. Contains methylxanthines, theobromine, and caffeine
Grapes and raisins - contains toxins that can cause sudden development of kidney failure within 48 hours of snacking. Contains Mycotoxin.
Anti-freeze - can cause vomiting, diarrhea and breathing difficulties. contains Ethylene glycol.

Scared Pit Bull left by Heartless Owners to Die

Scared Pit Bull, pit bull rescue

Hope For Paws received a call from Rescue From The Hart about a Pit Bull stranded in a remote location. The dog's heartless, irresponsible owners had abandoned her there, leaving her to die. She was found in a vacant fenced government property that the rescuers couldn't access, so they needed the pit bull to come to them. The rescuers placed a cheeseburger across the road, hoping that the pit bull found a way out of the fence to get to the food. Well she did, the goodhearted rescuers tried to bait her with the food throwing little pieces, but she was afraid of them and was extremely cautious so they set a trap instead and watch her from a distance. She was so hungry that after a few minutes, she took the bait and the trap door closed behind her. Now she's safe thanks to the rescuers!

The moment she was in a safe location the rescuers remove her from the trap cage and after some time she was wagging her tail, it was so heartwarming. I hope someone adopt her!

Dog's First Aid

I read a very informative article on Los Angeles Register on how to save your Dog's lives in case of emergency. It gave tips on important points you should know if you are a dog owner. The tips are from Denise Fleck an animal care instructor with the Los Angeles County Regional Occupational Program and author.

Here are the important tips:

1. Put the closest 24-hour animal emergency center on your speed dial. It will also be helpful if you visit the place and check how much they charge, services available, and form of payment they accept.

2. Attend a pet first aid class and have a pet first aid kit at home. Pet first aid kits should include hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting when cats or dogs ingest certain types of poison, gauze to stop bleeding and a thermometer to take your pet’s temperature under the tail. (101 degrees Fahrenheit is normal for cats and dogs, but 104 means there is something wrong.)

3. CPR in dogs are different, you will need to close off the mouth and breathe into your pet’s nose for a direct pathway.

A Pit bull mix was seen running on the 710 freeway last Thursday August 21, 2014. It was really dangerous and the dog can be hit by speeding vehicles. However, brave and animal loving Los Angeles area drivers teamed up to rescue the dog. Vehicles were seen slowly following and shielding the dog from other vehicles.

When they led the dog on the side of the road, brave Andie Valerio chase the dog and capture it with her bare hands, lifting her to safety.

The Pit bull mix is female and she was wearing a purple collar. The dog has no microchips or tags. I hope she can be reunited with her owners or better yet a responsible pet owner adopt her.

How can you tell if your Dog is Depressed

depressed dog, lonely dog

It's hard to tell if your dog is depressed since you can't ask how they feel or if they are okay. This is why it is very important to bring your dog to a vet if you see your best-friend has an abrupt change in behavior. So that they can assess what causes it.

Depression in dogs differs from each, here are some signs that dogs make if they are depressed:

1. Moody - the most common sign that your dog is depressed is if suddenly your pet stop getting excited on things he look forward to. You will see him often inactive and moping around all day. His head will be hanging and his tail are between his legs. His ears will also be pulled back.

If you want him to get back to his perky self is to introduce new activities or toys and when you see his tail wag or if he gets excited reinforce the positive behavior immediately.

2. Eat less or Don't eat at all - if a dog is depressed he usually eat less or worse he will refuse food at all.

Make sure you feed your dog on schedule as much as possible and be patient if he don't eat immediately once you give the bowl don't remove it right away. You can also add a little wet food but not always he might look for it every meal time.

3. Inactivity, sleep too much - On the average dogs sleeps 14 hours a day. But if the dog seems to sleep too much give him something to do or give the little pooch a walk.

4. Aggressive behavior - usually it is because of not enough exercise, so let him run in the yard or in a park.

5. Appears looking for someone - this usually happens following the loss of a family member the dog will look from one room to another searching for the lost individual.

Depressed dog will be okay as long as they are drinking, eating, urinating and defecating and they still wants to go outside for a walk just be patient specially if they are grieving. By giving them ample attention and activity like enjoyable things your dog likes, most of them tend to overcome depression on their own.

Cops issue warning about leaving kids and pets in hot cars

dog hot car, dogs in hot vehicle, dog in hot vehicle, dog in hot car

With rising temperatures it's important not to leave small children and pets inside a park vehicle. Leaving your pet and kids in a hot vehicle will not just endanger your love ones but you will also be facing the law.

Lt. Mike Budreau of the Medford Police Department said that this is a problem when spring and summer arrives.

Diana Schropp a vet at Medford's Southern Oregon Veterinary Specialty Center said that, when the temperature is getting higher from 70 Fahrenheit and above, leaving a pet in a hot car even with a cracked window and with the air-conditioning off can result to heat stroke. If the dogs temperatures get to 106 and above, the dog will have seizures since dogs have difficulties in cooling off and getting rid of excess heat. Symptoms of heat exhaustion in dogs includes forceful panting, weakness, staggering and a darker colored gum.

American Veterinary Medical Association stated that just 10 minutes inside a parked car the temperature can rise 20 degrees hotter than the air outside. It will also continue to rise every minute.

For kids, symptoms of heat exhaustion include vomiting, dizziness, fatigue, and headache.

Leaving your pet locked inside a hot parked vehicle will get you a 2nd degree animal neglect which is a Class B misdemeanor. If the pet is injured or dies, you will get a 1st degree animal neglect which is a Class A misdemeanor.

Police advice people to call 911 if they see a hot vehicle with a distressed dog or kids inside an officer will respond to rescue them.

Degenerative Myelopathy Disease in Dogs

Degenerative Myelopathy Disease Dogs, DM, German shepherd

I think my 12year old German shepherd dog has a Degenerative Myelopathy Disease. Since I noticed that he is having difficulty standing. He drags his hind feet while walking and he's wobly when walking. He has been a member of our family for 12 years and it will be hard losing him. He's also having urinary and fecal continence. But he eats well. we will be bringing him to the Vet for testing.

I found valuable information about Degenerative Myelopathy Disease on caninegeneticdiseases.net, and it is sad that it is an incurable disease. All we can do now is take care of our dog until his last breath.

Canine degenerative myelopathy (DM) or chronic degenerative radiculomyelopathy is a progressive disease that affects the dogs spinal cord that is comparable to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Ussually it affects older dogs. The onset is typically begins at the age of 8 years old.

It will begin with the loss of coordination (ataxia) of the dogs hind limbs. You will notice that dog will wobble while walking and standing up. The dog will also drag the hind feet. It will initially affect one hind limb and then the other. As the disease advances, the dog's limbs will become weak and the dog begins will have difficulty standing until the dog will not able to walk. It can take from 6 months to 12 months before the dog turn paraplegic. The dog will also experience loss of urinary and fecal continence. Degenerative Myelopathy Disease is not a painful disease.

Degenerative Myelopathy Disease offenly affects German shepherd dog, boxer, and Pembroke Welsh corgi.

Here is a video on How to Care for a Dog with Degenerative Myelopathy

While rescuing neglected pets, she brings with her "Polo," a 3-year-old bull dog-pit bull mix. Polo was rescued on the north side of Flint.

Campbell said: "Polo was pretty much dying when we picked him up. We had known him for months and months, but we couldn't get him from the owner. He was being used for breeding."

"Eventually, volunteers were able to convince the owner that Polo was not going to benefit them anymore and the owner gave him up to Pets in Peril. Finally, after all those months, we got him. I was so happy." she adopted Polo after fostering him.

Martha Stewart and Her Pets

Martha Stewart and Her Pets, Ghenghis Khan chow chow, Martha Stewart, Martha Stewart pets

Emmy award-winning TV show host Martha Stewart loves her pets, who wouldn't they are so lovely puffy creatures. On Martha's latest book titled "Living the Good Long Life: A Practical Guide to Caring for Yourself and Others" she said "Pets are a very important part of my life."

"I come home because I have my pets. And I want to see my pets and pet my pets and cuddle with them." She even likened the experience of having pets to having a young child in the house.

She has very cute Chow chow named Ghenghis Khan who always sleeps fronting the door, he has a strong sense of guard dog mentality but I don't think burglars will get scared of him. Ghenghis Khan is too cute to be scary. Stewart also remember one time that Ghenghis Khan woker her up at 3:30 a.m. just to let him outside to pee.

"He came to the side of my bed and he whined. And I took him downstairs and took him outside. And we walked around, looking for this full moon, which was almost discreet. And so he went pee. And we came back inside. And I went back up to bed. But I don't mind doing it. It's just part of my existence. And they make me happy."

She also has two Frenchies named Francesca and Sharkey which have their own blog "The Daily Wag."
